Common Unit Conversion Mistakes

Eight pairs of units that share a name, a symbol, or a rough size, and produce wrong answers when they get swapped. Every one of these appears in real recipes, manuals and spec sheets.

Nm and nm

Nm is the newton-meter, a unit of torque. nm is the nanometer, a billionth of a meter. The capital N is the symbol for the newton; the lowercase n is the prefix nano. Swapping them changes a torque figure into a length one.

This isn't a hypothetical. Google's own answer box for the phrase "nm to inch pounds" currently returns a figure in the tens of millions, because it reads the unit as nanometers. If a converter hands you an absurdly large number for a fastener spec, this is almost always the reason. The torque converter covers this in more detail.

Fluid and dry ounces

A fluid ounce measures volume. An ounce measures weight. They share a name and nothing else.

One US cup holds 8 fluid ounces of any liquid, always. But 8 ounces of all-purpose flour by weight fills close to 1.9 cups, because flour is far less dense than water. A recipe calling for "8 oz flour" almost certainly means weight. The ounces to cups converter keeps the two modes separate for this reason.

US and imperial gallons

The US gallon is 3.785411784 liters. The imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. Both figures are exact by definition, and they differ by roughly 20 percent. The same split runs through pints and fluid ounces, so a British pint isn't an American one.

Fuel economy figures inherit this problem twice over, since miles per gallon means something different on each side of the Atlantic.

Calories and Calories

The calorie on a nutrition label is a kilocalorie: 1,000 thermochemical calories. It is sometimes written with a capital C to mark the difference, but that convention is inconsistently applied.

Confusing them produces an error of a factor of 1,000, which is the largest routine mistake on this list. One thermochemical calorie is 4.184 joules exactly; one food Calorie is 4,184 joules.

Troy and avoirdupois ounces

The everyday ounce, the avoirdupois ounce, is 28.349523125 grams exactly. The troy ounce, used for precious metals, is 31.1034768 grams. A troy ounce is about 10 percent heavier.

Gold quoted per ounce means troy ounces. Flour quoted in ounces means avoirdupois. Most converters offer only one and don't say which.

Decimal and binary bytes

Storage manufacturers use decimal units, where a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. Operating systems have historically reported binary units, where the same quantity of storage divides into 1,048,576-byte units. The correct binary names are kibibyte, mebibyte and gibibyte, though software rarely uses them.

This is why a drive sold as 1 TB shows as roughly 931 GB once formatted. Nothing is missing; the two systems are counting differently.

Pound-force and pound-mass

The pound is used both as a unit of mass and, as pound-force, a unit of force. In everyday weighing the distinction rarely matters. In engineering it does, because a force figure and a mass figure aren't interchangeable in a calculation.

If a spec sheet says lbf, it means force. If it says lbm or just lb in a weighing context, it means mass.

What is the most common unit conversion mistake?

Confusing fluid ounces with dry ounces. One measures volume and the other measures weight, they share a name, and both appear constantly in recipes.

Which mistake causes the largest error?

Mixing up the food Calorie with the thermochemical calorie. That is a factor of 1,000, far larger than any other pair on this page.
