Why the gap is worse up here
The decimal and binary conventions diverge by 2.4 percent at each step, and the steps compound. By the terabyte the gap is about 10.0 percent, which is why the discrepancy on a large drive looks alarming when the same effect on a memory card doesn't.

Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
Because it holds a trillion bytes, which the manufacturer counts as 1 TB decimal, while your operating system divides by 1,024 four times and reports about 931 GB. Nothing is missing.
Is 1 TB 1000 GB or 1024 GB?
1,000 under the decimal convention used by manufacturers and the SI, 1,024 under the binary convention used by most operating systems.
