Km to Miles: Kilometers to Miles Converter
Road distances and race distances, with the common running events already worked out.
Enter a number.
The formula
mi = km × 0.62137119 (rounded)
km = mi × 1.609344 (exact)
The mile is defined in terms of the meter, so converting miles to kilometers is exact while the reverse is a rounded reciprocal.

Distance isn't pace
Converting a distance is simple. Converting a pace isn't the same operation, and it trips people up. Minutes per kilometer and minutes per mile move in opposite directions to the distance conversion: a 5 minute per kilometer pace is roughly 8 minutes 3 seconds per mile, because the mile is longer and therefore takes more time.
If you multiply a per-kilometer pace by 0.621 you will get a number that looks plausible and is wrong.
Common questions
How many miles is 5 km?
5 kilometers is 3.107 miles. That is why a 5K race is often described as just over three miles.
How many miles is a marathon?
A marathon is 42.195 kilometers, which is 26.219 miles, usually quoted as 26.2.
Is 1 km exactly 0.62137119 miles?
No. The exact definition runs the other way: a mile is exactly 1609.344 meters. The kilometer-to-mile figure is the reciprocal, rounded.
How do I convert km to miles in my head?
Multiply by 6 and drop a digit. 5 km times 6 is 30, giving 3.0 miles against the true 3.107. Close enough for a rough answer.
