Driving Abroad: Reading Speed Limits in km/h and mph
The arithmetic is trivial. The problem is that a number on a sign carries no unit, and the same digits mean two very different speeds depending on which side of a border you are on.
Reference only, and limits change. Posted signs and local law always override anything on this page. Figures below are typical defaults for a standard passenger car, not a guarantee for any specific road.
The sign isn't in your unit
You leave the airport in Spain and the motorway sign says 120. Read as mph that is an absurd speed. Read correctly as km/h it is about 75 mph, which is ordinary.
The confusion runs the other way too. A visitor from continental Europe sees a UK motorway sign reading 70 and, thinking in km/h, drives at roughly half the legal limit while traffic piles up behind.
Continental Europe signs in km/h without exception. The United Kingdom is the only country in Europe that still signs in mph, and Ireland, despite sharing a land border with it, signs in km/h. That border is the single most abrupt unit change on any road in Europe.
Which speedometer scale is the real one
Most cars show both units, and the larger outer scale is normally the unit of the market the car was sold into. A car sold in Germany puts km/h in large figures with mph small; a car sold in the US or UK reverses that.
This matters in a hire car, because you may be handed a vehicle configured for a market that isn't the one you are driving in. Before leaving the rental lot, glance at the speedometer and check which scale matches the numbers you are about to see on signs. On a digital dashboard the unit is usually switchable in the settings menu, and it's worth doing rather than converting in your head at speed.
The shortcut that errs slow
To read a km/h sign in mph, multiply by 0.6.
km/h ≈ mph × 1.6 (exact factor is 1.609344)
A 100 sign becomes 60 mph, against an exact 62.1. A 130 becomes 78, against an exact 80.8.
The useful property isn't the accuracy but the direction of the error. Multiplying by 0.6 always understates, by between 0.6 mph at 30 km/h and 3.0 mph at 140. Act on the shortcut and you drive slightly under the limit rather than slightly over. A shortcut that erred the other way would be worse than no shortcut at all.

All values km/h unless marked. Three of these catch foreign drivers repeatedly. The Netherlands holds most of its motorway network at 100 between 06:00 and 19:00, so the same road has two limits depending on the hour; the night limit is 100, 120 or 130 depending on the stretch, and since April 2025 a short list of sections runs at 130 around the clock, so the signs and the matrix boards decide rather than the time of day. France and Italy reduce motorway limits in rain, which means the legal speed changes with the weather rather than with any sign you passed. And German autobahn stretches without a posted limit still carry a 130 advisory: exceed it and you can be held partly liable in a collision even if you didn't cause it.
Fines follow you home
Within the EU, the Cross-Border Enforcement Directive lets member states exchange vehicle registration data, so a fine issued abroad can reach your home address months later. Hiring the car doesn't insulate you; the rental company passes on your details.
Two enforcement details surprise people. Several countries scale fines to income rather than to the offence, so the same speed costs very different amounts depending on who is driving. And average-speed cameras, known as SPECS in the UK, Tutor in Italy and Section Control in Austria and the Netherlands, measure you over a stretch rather than at a point, so braking for the camera achieves nothing.

Is a 130 sign in Europe 130 mph?
No. Continental European signs are in kilometers per hour, so 130 km/h is about 81 mph. The numbers on European signs look alarming to anyone used to mph precisely because km/h figures are roughly 1.6 times larger for the same speed. If a posted number seems implausibly high for the road you are on, that is the unit difference rather than an unusually fast limit.
